HIV awareness campaigns promise screening boost in Peru, Nicaragua:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The Peruvian health ministry is due to launch next week an AIDS awareness campaign, in a bid to reduce HIV transmission rates. The campaign, headed by Dr Nora Ojeda Celi, will be targeted at the younger age groups and women: HIV prevalence is highest in the 25-29-year range, which accounted for 4,100 of the almost 20,000 cases registered at April 2007, while over the last 20 years, HIV infection among women has increased from 9% to 25%. In Nicaragua, where up to 20,000 people are thought to be infected, the national HIV/AIDS association is considering a similar initiative, with a focus on urging people to come forward for testing.
