FD&C RED NO. 40, BLUE NO. 1 EYE AREA USE APPROVED by FDA in two final rules published in the Feb. 16 Federal Register. The rules amend the color additive regs to permanently list FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Blue No. 1 and their aluminum lakes as safe for use in cosmetics and drug products intended to be used in the eye area. The regs will go into effect March 19; FDA is accepting written objections to the rules through March 18.
