L'Oreal S.A.: Total sales for the L'Oreal Group cosmetic division grew by 20.4%, the Clichy, France-based parent says. The L'Oreal Group was formed in July 1994 by consolidating Cosmair Inc. USA, Cosmair Canada Inc. and Lorsa Fagel, the firm's former Swiss agent, as well as 49% of Procasa, L'Oreal's Spanish agent ("The Rose Sheet" Oct. 17, In Brief). Consolidated sales in 1994 were up 18.5% to FFr 47.6 bil., or $8.9 bil., based on the Dec. 31 exchange rate of $1 = FFr 5.3370. On a pro forma basis, including sales from the cosmetics group for the whole year, consolidated sales would have been FFr 51.7 bil., or $9.7 bil...

ModiFace launches forecasting tool: Toronto-based virtual makeover firm introduces ShadeCast, a makeup sampling and forecasting tool based on behavioral tracking. ShadeCast is used in conjunction with iPhone application MakeUp, which allows consumers to virtually try on makeup in hundreds of shades from brands including Revlon, Cover Girl, Lancome and Clinique. ShadeCast offers 1,000 cosmetic shades from 40 brands and assigns a ShadeScore "to approximately position the [app's] hottest and most sampled color." ModiFace exec Nikkie Gatto likens the app to radio music playlists, helping consumers "looking to capture the current look, but also provide vital market intelligence to our retail channel partners," she says in Nov. 3 release. "The value of data to demonstrate the aggregate behavior will help the industry predict the latest trends and help cosmetic manufacturers better understand the color and products which most resonate with online and iPhone virtual makeover users," the company says
