This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

SULISOBENZONE's CONTINUED CATEGORY I STATUS AS SUNSCREEN SUPPORTED by Schering-Plough and the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association in separate letters to FDA. Schering-Plough's Feb. 28 letter, submitted in response to a Jan. 12 request for industry information on the ingredient, urges the continued availability of "safe Category I sunscreen actives" like sulisobenzone "which offer the benefit of versatility in formulation." The letter was forwarded to the agency by the Nonprescription Drug Manufacturers Association, which noted that Schering-Plough's position is also endorsed by Chattem.
