Executive Summary

PEPPERMINT, SAGE OIL ACTION AGAINST PLAQUE, GINGIVITIS NEEDS MORE STUDY, FDA's OTC Plaque Subcommittee pointed out at an April 12 meeting in Rockville, MD. After reviewing efficacy studies on toothpastes and an oral rinse containing peppermint oil and sage oil, subcommittee member Stanley Saxe, DMD, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, noted that "there appears to be insufficient data from controlled studies to establish the effectiveness" of the ingredients "as antiplaque/antigingivitis agents."
