Connecticut Public Act 95-57: Heavy metal packaging act allowing the use of packaging that incidentally retains "small amounts" of lead, cadmium, mercury or hexavalent chromium awaits Governor John Roland (R) signature May 18. The act (formerly HB 6880), passed the Connecticut House floor April 26 and the Senate floor May 3. HB 6880 was introduced March 2 by the House Environment Committee. Another state heavy metal packaging act, New Hampshire Chapter 78, was signed into law May 9 by Governor Stephen Merrill (R). Introduced as SB 129 by Sen. Beverly Rodeschin (R-Newport) Jan. 31, Chapter 78 exempts certain packages and packing components containing those same heavy metals from New Hampshire's current toxic reduction laws provided the packages meet certain recycling standards ("The Rose Sheet" March 13, p. 3)...

ModiFace launches forecasting tool: Toronto-based virtual makeover firm introduces ShadeCast, a makeup sampling and forecasting tool based on behavioral tracking. ShadeCast is used in conjunction with iPhone application MakeUp, which allows consumers to virtually try on makeup in hundreds of shades from brands including Revlon, Cover Girl, Lancome and Clinique. ShadeCast offers 1,000 cosmetic shades from 40 brands and assigns a ShadeScore "to approximately position the [app's] hottest and most sampled color." ModiFace exec Nikkie Gatto likens the app to radio music playlists, helping consumers "looking to capture the current look, but also provide vital market intelligence to our retail channel partners," she says in Nov. 3 release. "The value of data to demonstrate the aggregate behavior will help the industry predict the latest trends and help cosmetic manufacturers better understand the color and products which most resonate with online and iPhone virtual makeover users," the company says
