Dial Corp.: Firm's Consumer Products Group to close six plants, reducing its workforce by 700 people (approximately 15%), the firm announces Sept. 27. The closures are part of a restructuring plan that includes phasing out or cutting back on the distribution of certain product lines, including Purex bleach and Lunch Bucket microwave meals, in an attempt to cut costs and "improve our competitiveness in the consumer products business," Dial says. The changes will help the firm concentrate on its core brands such as Dial, Breck, Spirit and Tone. For the third quarter, Dial notes that it is writing down its losses from the Breck line after its relaunch of Breck Salon Essentials earlier this summer ("The Rose Sheet" Aug. 28, p. 7)...
