AHA adverse reactions may be linked to pH rather than concentration -- FDA's Bailey.

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

AHA ADVERSE REACTIONS MAY BE LINKED TO pH, NOT CONCENTRATION, FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors Director John Bailey suggested to the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association Scientific Conference attendees Nov. 5. Bailey theorized that because the alpha hydroxy acid reactions being reported "are not limited to higher-concentration products," it is possible that they are "related more to the pH of the products than the actual concentration" of AHAs.
