Executive Summary

Block Drug: Acquires Lava soap from Procter & Gamble, the firms announce Nov. 20. Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, P&G will continue to manufacture Lava for "a period of time," P&G says. Lava becomes part of Block's Household Products Division, which includes 2000 Flushes and x-14 cleaners. Sales for Jersey City, NJ-based Block Drug totaled $351 mil. for the first six months of FY 1996 (ended Sept. 30), compared to $301.7 mil. in the year-earlier period. The deal is part of P&G's ongoing program to divest 10 brands that, in total, represent less than one-half of 1% of P&G consolidated sales. The company already has sold five "non-strategic" brands, including Bain de Soleil suncare to Pfizer in August ("The Rose Sheet" Aug. 21, p. 1)...
