Color additive lakes: A proposed rule removing color additive lakes from their provisionally listed status is expected to be published within weeks, FDA said. At CTFA's "Meet the Regulators" conference on Jan. 25, FDA's CFSAN Deputy Director for Systems and Support Janice Oliver said the rule will incorporate comments and data received in response to the agency's 1979 notice of proposed rulemaking, which asked for feedback on issues such as analytical methods for intermediate stability of lakes during manufacturing. A comment period will follow the publication of the proposed rule which covers more than 40 additives, FDA said. The delay in regulating color lakes, which are the last items on the color additives provisional list established in 1960, has drawn the attention of Representatives of Congress including, most recently, House Commerce/Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee Chairman Joe Barton (R-TX). His predecessor, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) also expressed concern regarding FDA's lack of timeliness in the issue. Straight colors were acted upon in the 1980s...
