Shiseido: Worldwide cosmetics sales rose 8% to $5.12 bil. (yen 436.7 bil.) for FY 1996 (ended March 31), based on an exchange rate of $1=yen 117.28, the Tokyo-based company reported May 15. Shiseido attributed the increase to the expansion of business into Brazil, Turkey, Israel, Cyprus and the Czech Republic. The firm's cosmetics segment represents 74.2% of its overall business. Shiseido's toiletries business (16.1% of overall sales) slipped 6.9% to $1.11 bil., as a result of "tough operating conditions" and a "particularly slow" demand for hair care products, Shiseido said. Shiseido consolidated sales advanced 4.9% to $6.9 bil. Net income climbed 9.4% to $224.6 mil. during the year. International sales, which represent 11% of Shiseido's overall business, shot up 28%, while revenue for the company's domestic unit advanced 2.7%...
