FRAGRANCE DIVERSION: NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY SENATORS REQUEST $2 MIL. in FY 1998 Justice Department appropriations to create a cargo theft task force in the New York/New Jersey area, similar to one founded in Miami. In a June 11 letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee/Commerce Subcommittee Chairman Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), New York GOP Sens. Alfonse D'Amato and Patrick Moynihan, and New Jersey Democratic Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Torricelli request that additional funding be "made available to establish a task force on cargo theft" in the two states under the direction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A budget of $1 mil. was allocated in FY 1997 for the Miami-based task force. Fragrance products represent the second highest reported incidences of cargo theft, behind computer/electronic material.
