FDA OFFICE OF COSMETICS & COLORS ANTICIPATES "SIGNIFICANT" CUTS IN BUDGET, STAFF under the proposed operating plan for FDA submitted to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees the week of Jan. 5. Under the proposal, the agency's Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition is slated to receive a $4.4 mil. funding increase to $87.6 mil. for fiscal 1998, which began Oct. 1. Within CFSAN's operating budget, however, $12 mil. has been earmarked for food safety initiatives, which the agency plans to fund through eliminating "lower priority work" within the center.
