Executive Summary

NTP cosmetics reviews: Federal program soliciting public comment and data on cosmetic ingredients proposed for safety review in 1998, the National Institutes of Health National Toxicology Program announced Feb. 3. Among the list of ingredients proposed for carcinogenicity and teratogenicity testing are 2-acetylpyridine, a fragrance material and constituent of natural essential oils, and 2- chloropyridine, an intermediate chemical in the manufacture of some cosmetics, NTP said. NTP is also calling for comments on three botanical ingredients -- comfrey, goldenseal and saw palmetto. NTP noted a "recommendation for testing does not necessarily mean a substance is a carcinogen or mutagen but often reflects" substances that have gone into use without much testing...
