Sunscreen monograph

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

Schering-Plough clarifies certain points made in the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association's April 15 petition for a stay of the sunscreen final monograph. In May 13 comments to FDA, Schering maintains many marketed sunscreens protect against UVA/UVB rays in response to CTFA's assertion the monograph would "mislead" consumers into thinking available sunscreens protect against UVA only. The Coppertone manufacturer also clarifies CTFA's statement that UVA protection "may be the most important factor in preventing skin cancer caused by the sun" by stating the majority of medical literature has found that "while UVA likely contributes to skin cancer, the primary causative wavelengths are in the UVB range"
