Estee Lauder Reaches For The Stars With Stila Purchase

Executive Summary

Estee Lauder is gaining a piece of Hollywood with its acquisition of Los Angeles-based Stila Cosmetics. Founded by 35-year-old celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, the Stila brand consists of "stylish, wearable products" housed in environmentally conscious packaging. Terms of the Aug. 5 deal were not disclosed. The agreement is expected to close in August.

Estee Lauder assumes Japanese distribution of Stila Cosmetics, effective Aug. 1. The brand, which Estee Lauder acquired in August 1999, will be distributed under a newly created subsidiary, Stila Cosmetics K.K., Lauder announces June 20. Stila had been sold in Japan since August 1998 via a joint venture with the Shiseido subsidiary Interact (1"The Rose Sheet" Aug. 9, 1999, p. 10). Aveda Sales Up 43% As Estee Lauder Hones Salon Distribution

Estee Lauder's Aveda sales increased 43% to $29.8 mil. in the fiscal second quarter "attributed to the refinements in the Aveda salon distribution," CEO Fred Langhammer told analysts during a Jan. 27 conference call.
