Formulated with aloe, jojoba and vitamin E, a custom-blended lipstick or gloss costs $35, with reorders priced at $10 each. Records of each customer's formula are "permanently stored...for reordering" so that "your designer color is never discontinued," according to the Web site. The products are highlighted on CosmeticMall.com's home page.

Personally Styled and CosmeticMall.com hope to use the technology to offer a full range of color-matched products in the future, the company said.

CosmeticMall.com carries Personally Styled products alongside about 6,000 other offerings from 100 prestige and mass market brands, including Clinique, Sebastian and Sally Hansen. The site also specializes in hard-to-find brands such as Fran Wilson, Profaces and Z New York. CosmeticMall.com debuted in 1996 with about 200 products and was recently relaunched with expanded product offerings and services.

To draw visitors to the site, the firm uses online ad but is awaiting further funding before beginning an off-line campaign. The e-retailer's attractions include an e-mail advice service through which consumers can consult with 12 "New York beauty advisors."

CosmeticMall.com also features a Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and a Consumer's Guide highlighting FDA information and warnings in laymen's terms to help consumers research possible allergens and other health and safety issues related to cosmetics.

In addition, CosmeticMall.com positions itself as being concerned with the total welfare of women, with links to other sites under headings including "Activism and Politics" and "Rape [and] Domestic Violence."

Chief Operating Officer Stanley Katz was a founder of West Cabot Cosmetics, now Cabot Labs. He sold his interest in 1988 to co-found Katco Industries, a developer of specialty market products within which CosmeticMall.com originally was created.
