EU marketing ban

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

European Union postpones the June 30 implementation deadline of a ban that would prohibit the marketing of any cosmetic ingredient or combination tested on animals as part of the Sixth Amendment to the Cosmetics Directive May 5. The Committee on the Adaptation of Technical Progress has extended the deadline to June 30, 2002, due in part to the absence of alternative testing methods. The delay also will allow the EU to review legislation commonly known as the Seventh Amendment, which would place a testing ban on cosmetics and eliminate a potential World Trade Organization conflict with the marketing ban (1"The Rose Sheet" April 17, p. 8). Legislative review is expected to take up to 18 months to complete
