Executive Summary

Presently there is "no reason for consumers to be alarmed at the use of cosmetics containing phthalates," FDA says in April 19 statement posted on agency's redesigned cosmetics Web site. FDA is evaluating phthalates report published by Center for Disease Control in March to determine if levels are health concern. If health hazard exists, FDA will advise industry and public and "will consider its legal options," agency says. CDC report found human exposure to some phthalates higher and more common than previously expected and confirmed earlier CDC findings (1"The Rose Sheet" March 26, p. 6). Data have prompted CDC to further study ingredients to examine pathways to humans
