Neutrogena Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Debuting As Coal Tar Alternative

A Neutrogena dandruff formula bowing early next year will offer an alternative to coal tar-containing dandruff products, according to the Johnson & Johnson division.

Likely to debut under the name Neutrogena Daily Control, the new shampoo and conditioner were presented to retailers at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Marketplace meeting in San Diego June 7-10.

With the introduction of the duo, Neutrogena is "carving a niche with products that don't sacrifice benefits," according to the firm. "Consumers want strong efficacy but a nice fragrance and lather" as well, Neutrogena added.

While J&J execs were unwilling to disclose the active ingredient in the formula, they said it treats dandruff while also offering a pleasant scent. Unlike coal tar-containing products, the new formula also can be used on a daily basis.

The new formula is targeted to consumers who do not currently use Neutrogena's Therapeutic T/Gel dandruff shampoo because of its coal tar formula, the firm added. T/Gel is recommended for use two or three times a week, according to Neutrogena.

In California, coal tar is listed as a toxic chemical under Prop 65 due to its carcinogenic potential. In a Prop 65 case settled last year, Neutrogena was among a number of companies required to place Prop 65 warnings on shampoos exceeding .5% coal tar equivalent (1 'The Rose Sheet' Feb. 18, 2002, In Brief).

Neutrogena does not expect its new product to target the same consumer as Procter & Gamble's Head & Shoulders dandruff brand, the firm said. Head & Shoulders is formulated with the active ingredient zinc pyrithione.

Daily Control will be line-priced with T/Gel at about $4.99. In addition to T/Gel, Neutrogena also markets Healthy Scalp dandruff shampoo for color treated and permed hair.

Healthy Scalp bowed in 1994 and contains the active ingredient salicylic acid (2 (Also see "NEUTROGENA HEALTHY SCALP ANTI-DANDRUFF SHAMPOO" - HBW Insight, 27 Jun, 1994.), p. 9). J&J also markets Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo formulated with ketaconazole.
