EC seeking input on parabens

Executive Summary

European Commission will hold a hearing Oct. 23 in Brussels to collect additional safety data on (iso)propyl and (iso)butyl paraben in follow-up to a pair of opinions from its Scientific Committee on Consumer Products dealing with the use of parabens in cosmetic products. In an opinion adopted by SCCP in January 2005, the panel concluded that the acceptable daily intake (ADI) established in 1994 by the EC's Scientific Committee on Food - 10 mg/kg bw/day as the sum of methyl, ethyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters and their sodium salts - should remain unchanged. Regarding propyl, isopropyl, butyl and isobutyl paraben, SCCP determined that "more information is needed in order to formulate a final statement" on the maximum concentrations allowable in cosmetics. A 2006 SCCP opinion evaluating new data submitted by industry maintained that the data had "too many shortcomings" to be considered scientifically valid; therefore, the 2005 opinion went unchanged.
