SkinClinical Innovations' Lycology , touted as the first line of "breathable" skin care and foundation for the prestige market, will debut in the fall, the firm says. Featuring a "triple-silica gel" base, Lycology products allow oxygen and moisture to reach the skin while the products' moisture and anti-aging actives work on skin. The breathable base functions a bit like the technical fabric Gore Tex, said Lesley Holmes, marketing controller for Lycology. "You can think of [it as] a mesh on your face that allows air and moisture to pass through your skin, whereas most makeup is almost like putting a mask, or vinyl, on your face," she told "The Rose Sheet" July 15. Makeup that inhibits the flow of oxygen can bring on the appearance of wrinkles and acne, Holmes said. SkinClinical Innovations first used its triple-silica gel oxygenating technology in a foundation line called Lycogel , available to medical professionals since 2004 to disguise and protect against the erythema, bruising and scars that can result from aesthetic procedures. The company introduced a consumer version, Dermacia Breathable Foundation, in 2005. That product is sold through infomercials. The firm's breathablity claim was backed by a clinical study comparing the oxygen permeability of Lycogel Camouflage SPF 30 against marketed foundations including Prevage MD, NARS Sedona Balanced, Prescriptions Flawless Skin Total Protection Makeup SPF 15 and Estee Lauder Resilience Life Extreme Makeup SPF 15. The tests showed that the Lycogel foundation posted "the highest rate of oxygen permeability of all the tested products," according to the firm. The cleansers, moisturizers, serums, makeup primer, foundation, bronzer, eye gel and spritzers in the Lycology line - 11 products in total - all feature SkinClinical's breathable base and treat skin with the firm's Lyco 3 Complex . Lyco 3 Complex - a consumer version of the company's medical-grade Lyco 4 Complex used in Lycogel foundations - is a proprietary blend of anti-aging ingredients that helps the skin to breathe while discouraging inflammation and irritation. The complex also contains live yeast cell derivatives that facilitate oxygen uptake in the skin. In addition, Lycology products are formulated with Mitostime, which helps mitochondria in skin cells convert oxygen to energy and food. "As we age, that function slows down. So [Mitostime is] working with your skin to make it function at its optimal health," Holmes said. Further benefits are provided by the exfoliant Derm SRC, moisturizing sodium hyaluronate, epidermal growth factor to strengthen the skin's barrier function, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen, the firm says. SkinClinical says it is targeting women in their 30's and 40's who are looking for fresh-looking, youthful skin, according to Jessica Liebeskind, a makeup artist representing the brand. Lycology foundation products are designed to impart a youthful glow to skin and cover up any imperfections, Liebeskind said. Lycology's Illumination Day Serum With SPF 15 imparts a glow to the skin by employing moisture rather than pigments that glitter or shine, she noted. "Glow comes from moisturization and hydration - it doesn't have to come from shimmer and sparkle," Liebeskind said. The day serum is meant to be followed by SkinClinical's Anti-Aging Breathable Intense Moisturizer. That formula is based on aloe vera instead of water, as are most of the brand's other skin-care items in the brand, according to Holmes. - Molly Laas ([email protected]) |
