Executive Summary

Valeant Pharmaceuticals’ Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase brand introduces Instant Perfecting BB Cream SPF 15, while L’Oreal’s La Roche-Posay unit launches Effaclar Mat for individuals with oily skin and enlarged pores. More new products in brief.

L’Oreal Brand Launches BB Cream

Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase Instant Perfecting B.B. Cream SPF 15 is an all-in-one balm that “instantly” creates a luminous glow while providing a light tint with a sheer but flawless finish, according to the Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc.-owned brand. Launching in February, the cream contains Hordeum vulgare seed extract, a “powerful” alternative to kojic acid that brightens skin by inhibiting melanin synthesis. Cream also contains Lumisphere and diacetyl boldine to combat hyperpigmentation, as well as 3D Hydra APS natural phospholipids for hydration and passion flower oil for its calming properties, the firm says. Together, the formula’s ingredients even and brighten skin tone while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and protecting skin against UV damage. Cream will be available at Walmart for $15.95 and at Walgreens for $18.49, according to Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase.

La Roche-Posay Targets Excess Sebum

Adding to the Effaclar collection, L’Oreal luxury brand La Roche-Posay introduces Effaclar Mat, a moisturizer for individuals with shiny skin and enlarged pores caused by hyperseborrhea, or excessive sebum production. Formulated to “neutralize shine for lastingly matte, clear and balanced skin with tightened pores,” the treatment contains Sebulyse, a new active touted as “more powerful than zinc” that mattifies and refines pores, enabling Effaclar Mat to “more effectively minimize sebum from the start,” according to La Roche-Posay’s Jan. 23 release. Zinc pidolate, vitamins C and E and micro-exfoliating lipo-hydroxy acid also play roles, the brand notes. In a consumer test on 150 women, 94% of participants said their skin was “instantly mattified” after using Effaclar Mat, while 76% said their pores were both tightened and less visible and 94% said their skin texture was “more refined,” the firm says. The product retails for $31.99 at CVS, Walgreens, Duane Reade, Target, select Ulta locations, physicians’ offices and online.

Bluemercury Adds Eye Cream To M-61

Bluemercury line M-61 grows with Hydraboost Eye, launching at the end of February. The eye cream contains “power-packed” peptides to help reduce the appearance of lines, under-eye circles and puffiness; vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture; white mulberry and soy to improve circulation; and natural tamarind, aloe and Centella asiatica to repair and soothe skin. According to bluemercury CEO Marla Malcolm Beck, the eye cream fills a gap in the market insofar as most night eye creams are “too heavy for day” while most day eye creams lack “high-impact ingredients.” Designed for use at day and/or night, Hydraboost Eye will retail for $78 for 15 mL. Malcolm Beck launched the M-61 line in June 2012, featuring “scientifically proven” natural ingredients married with high concentrations of “dermatologist-loved” actives (Also see "Bluemercury Founder Launches M-61 “Power-Packed” Natural Skin Care" - HBW Insight, 4 Jun, 2012.).

The Brightside bubble bar offers a “bright and cheerful swirl” of Sicilian mandarin, tangerine and bergamot oil, while Easter Egg Hunt soap is scented with orange, raspberry, lemon and violet leaf absolute. Lush will introduce bath items in honor of Mother’s Day May 12, including Secret Garden bath bombs, floral bombs scented with roses, sweet wild orange and rosewood oils that release fizz and petals that float on the bath water; Mumkin bubble bar, which crumbles under running water “for soft pink water and masses of skin-softening raspberry-scented bubbles”; and three reusable bubble-bar wands that can be swished in the tub to create bubbles. Four other Mother's Day gifts will be revealed soon, Lush notes.
