ECHA May Be Stickler In 2018 For ‘Last Resort’ Animal Tests Only

REACH Registrants Should Bone Up On Alternative Test Requirements – ECHA

The European Chemicals Agency examined 164 animal testing proposals last year under the EU’s REACH regulation, resulting in 133 draft decisions seeking additional information, according to its 2016 Progress Report, which includes recommendations for existing and prospective registrants. The agency has implemented a tightened approach to ensure that animal testing is undertaken only as a “last resort.”

New REACH Rules Will Reduce Animal Use For Assessing Sensitization, Other Endpoints

Alternative testing methods addressing key events in the OECD's adverse outcome pathway for skin sensitization may be sufficient to fulfill REACH data needs under a new rule slated for implementation later this year. Another pending change is expected to reduce firms' dependence on animal tests to evaluate skin and eye irritation and acute toxicity as the final REACH deadline for phase-in substances draws closer.

ECHA Advises Read-Across Know-How, Only 'Last Resort' Animal Testing

ECHA's progress report on REACH evaluations conducted in 2015 identifies priority targets in its compliance checks and common shortcomings in registrants' dossiers. With new animal testing under the microscope, the agency provides guidance on using (Q)SARs to fill data gaps, as well as insight into its approach to assessing read-across, to assist companies readying for the May 31, 2018 registration deadline.
