Winckler leaves FDA

Susan Winckler, FDA chief of staff since January 2007, resigns, giving Commissioner Peggy Hamburg and the Obama administration further room to shape the agency. Winckler joined FDA as director for policy communications in September 2006, after serving as VP of policy and communications and staff counsel for the American Pharmacists Association. Three months after moving to FDA from the American Pharmacists Association (APA) and the same week Andrew von Eschenbach is confirmed as commissioner, Susan Winckler is named acting chief of staff for the commissioner. Winckler, an attorney, joined FDA in September 2006 as policy communications director in the commissioner's Office of Policy & Planning, where she was the point person for constituent communications and policy development on issues including updating policies and operations related to the management and operation of FDA advisory committees. Starting in January 2007, Winckler will coordinate staff activities and be the principal liaison to HHS. As APA's staff counsel and VP for policy communications, she was responsible for coordinating legislative, regulatory and private sector advocacy agendas, and public relations programs (1"The Tan Sheet" Dec. 1, 2003, p. 4)...
