Kao Steps Up Decarbonization Targets
Tokyo-based Kao Corporation aims to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2040 and carbon-negative status by 2050 by developing technology that enables CO2 to be used as a raw material, according to a May release from the chemicals, cosmetics and home-care products firm. Kao says it is committed to setting science-based targets that align with international greenhouse gas reduction goals to limit global temperature rise compared with pre-industrial levels. Accordingly, it will seek an upgraded certification from the Science Based Targets Initiative – established by the CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature – from 2 degrees to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Decarbonization figures among 19 “Kao Actions” outlined in Kao’s environmental, social and governance strategy released in April 2019, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan.
