Color additive petition

Henderson, Nev.-based Research It! filed a petition on behalf of COPA Distributions Oct. 19 for the use of the combination of pyrogallol and ferrous sulfate as a color additive in hair dyes. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel found pyrogallol "safe as used" as a hair dye ingredient in its final report in 1992. However, the ingredient is prohibited under the EC cosmetics directive. FDA published a notice of the petition in the Dec. 8 Federal Register
