CIR panel to review triclosan, set 2011 priorities

Executive Summary
At its next quarterly meeting Aug. 30-31 in Washington, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel will review controversial ingredient triclosan. Panel is taking a unique approach, concentrating on data and "subtle" issues surrounding triclosan that have not been reviewed extensively before (1"The Rose Sheet" July 26, 2010). Rep. Ed Markey D-Mass., has called for a ban of the antibacterial ingredient, citing questions about its "effectiveness and potentially harmful effects" (2"The Rose Sheet" April 12, 2010). Also during the meeting, CIR experts will have their first look at alkyl benzoates, isoparaffins, and nut and vegetable oils, and final reports are expected for methyl acetate and stearyl heptanoate groups. Keeping with the panel's mission to review substances used most frequently in personal-care products, ingredients that have more than 500 uses dominate the draft list of ingredients for review in 2011. The priority list will be finalized at the meeting
