CIR Considers Another Look At MI Safety In Light Of European Situation

At its Sept. 21-22 meeting, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel will consider a recent opinion from the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, which rejected updated industry data as grounds for raising safe-use MI limits in rinse-off cosmetics from 15 ppm to 100 ppm. CIR's current position is that concentrations of the preservative up to 100 ppm are safe in such products and that MI can be used safely in leave-on cosmetics, which SCCS also denies.

CIR Proposes Prioritizing Triclosan For Review In 2018
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel’s draft ingredient priority list for 2018 review consists of 14 ingredients, including triclosan. At their April meeting, panelists cited the potential for consumer confusion following recent FDA action banning the ingredient’s OTC use in antibacterial soaps, as well as endocrine-disruption concerns voiced by NGOs.
Danish EPA Finds Cosmetic Preservatives Safe 'Overall,' With Some Caveats
The Environmental Protection Agency in Denmark, a EU member state that has made a priority of preservative safety in recent years, says phenoxyethanol, two formaldehyde releasers and two other preservatives found in marketed personal-care items generally are safe in products used on their own daily or collectively as a full routine. However, the agency cannot rule out allergy risks in all cases, it says.
