Executive Summary

SkinLongevity Vital Power Infusion, the hero product in BareMinerals' new SKINSORIALS line, features the Long Life Herb from Okinowa, "the island of long life." More new products.

Clarisonic Launches Mini Sonic Cleanser

The L'Oreal Group's Clarisonic unit says new Mia FIT, introduced Feb. 1, is its most compact and versatile skin-cleansing device yet, "small enough to stash in a gym bag, carry-on or bathroom drawer." The brand says the miniaturized device is just as effective as its full-size tools, which it touts as "6x better than using hands alone," and features two speed settings like the MIA 2, "a 60-second delicate cleanse for everyday impurities" and "an 80-second power cleanse, perfect for after workouts or for long-wear makeup removal." In a consumer-perception study, 90% to 100% of participants who used Mia FIT daily for four weeks said the gadget awarded softer, smoother and more refreshed-feeling skin, effectively removed impurities and enhanced skin radiance. Clarisonic, which launched Alpha Fit for men in October 2015, continues working to promote uptake of sonic cleansing, noting that 52% of US adults are still using their hands to cleanse their face, according to a Harris Poll online survey (Also see "Clarisonic Introduces Sonic Cleansing Device For Men's 'F-ing Face'" - HBW Insight, 6 Oct, 2015.). "People embrace the latest innovations in every aspect of their life – so why not think twice about what you're using to cleanse your skin?" proposes Robb Akridge, Clarisonic co-founder and global president. Mia FIT is available for $189 at luxury retailers and the brand's website.

L'Oreal Prepping My UV Patch For Launch

The L'Oreal Group/La Roche-Posay has a stretchable skin sensor, My UV Patch, in the works, which the firm says will be made available to consumers later this year. Introduced Jan. 6 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the transparent adhesive measures approximately one square inch in area and 50 micrometers thick, sticking directly to skin that wearers want to monitor, L'Oreal says, contrasting the product with "rigid wearables" on the market currently (Also see "JUNE Bracelet, App Provide Protection Advice Based On Sun Exposure" - HBW Insight, 13 Jan, 2014.). "The key was to design a sensor that was thin, comfortable and virtually weightless so people would actually want to wear it. We're excited to be the first beauty company entering the stretchable electronics field," says Guive Balooch, global VP of the firm's Technology Incubator. According to the release, consumers will be able to snap a photo of the patch and upload it to a dedicated mobile app for analysis of the photosensitive dye squares, which will indicate how much UV exposure the wearer has sustained. L'Oreal partnered with stretchable electrics company MC10 on the patch's development.

BareMinerals SKINSORIALS

Sheseido Company, Limited's BareMinerals unit is running a 360-degree marketing campaign through March to promote the launch of its new nine-piece SKINSORIALS line. The collection, including hero product SkinLongevity Vital Power Infusion, features the Long Life Herb, or Chomeiso in Japanese, which BareMinerals says is a "super superfood" with higher vitamin and mineral content than spinach and kale. The plant grows in Okinawa, "the island of long life," and "legend has it that eating just one bunch of Long Life Herb will extend life by one day," according to the company's Dec. 5 announcement. The brand promises lavishly moisturized skin and reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, with benefits derived from California poppy and Lempuyang ginger extracts that combine with the Long Life Herb in BareMineral's SkinMimetic Technology. The collection is divided into Purify, Empower and Moisturize ranges, and products are priced at $48 for the SkinLongevity serum and lower.

Anti-Pollution Moisturizer Fetches Kickstarter Dollars

"The world's first all-natural anti-pollution moisturizing cream," from Canadian skin-care startup Aqua+ Skincare, met its funding goal of $14,115 on Kickstarter within two weeks. It now has generated more than $16,500 in pledges from 123 backers with five days to go in the campaign. While the company's first-to-market claim can be contested, it offers study results on its Kickstarter page backing the effectiveness of the product's Glycofilm Pollustop, "a transparent and non-occlusive protective shield that acts as a buffer between you and pollutants, allowing your skin to breathe while stimulating its natural defense mechanisms in the process." In an Oct. 1 release, the company says 80% of the worldʼs population is exposed to harmful air pollutants, and cites the Middle East, Southeast Asia, China and Africa as the most concentrated areas while maintaining that pollutant-exposure is a global public-health concern. According to Aqua+ Skincare, particles of smog, dirt and dust in the air are significantly smaller than skin pores, which allows them to penetrate skin easily, disrupt pH levels and prevent adequate moisture retention. Aqua+ PM Zero Anti-Pollution Moisturizing Cream "starts working instantly to firm up your skin and counteract the effects of pollution, providing deep nourishment, hydration and anti-oxidizing properties," the company says. The product can be had for a $60 pledge at Kickstarter, with shipment starting this month.

FlashPatch Lip Gels

Transdermal delivery firm Patchology says its new FlashPatch Lip Gels follow on the success of FlashPatch Eye Gels, incorporating the same Hydrasurge5 technology "to break beyond the boundaries of traditional lip balms and lip treatments to hydrate, smooth and revitalize lips for a flawless look and perfect lipstick application in only five minutes." The lip gels diminish the appearance of vertical lip lines and soften wrinkles with "potent peptides and antioxidant-rich ingredients," according to Patchology's Jan. 5 release. CEO Chris Hobson explains: "We saw the need for a fast-acting patch that could be incorporated into a daily routine versus strictly for special occasions. We are proud to be the first to address this concern with the creation of a travel-friendly jar with multiple sets of patches allowing them to truly become an everyday skincare staple." Jars containing 24 sets of lip patches each will retail at Neiman Marcus locations nationwide and NeimanMarcus.com for $50.
