FDA: ‘Vast Majority’ Of Antibac Soaps Need Reformulation Under Final Rule

FDA/CDER’s Teresa Michele says the “vast majority” of roughly 2,100 consumer antibacterial soaps on the market contain at least one of 19 antimicrobial ingredients banned from OTC use under an FDA final rule. Industry, which suggests the agency is overstating the rule’s impact, is focused on delivering supporting data for three active ingredients still pending before FDA for GRASE use in the category.

FDA's OTC Antiseptic Rulemaking Has EWG Eyeing Triclosan In Cosmetics

Triclosan eventually may be eliminated entirely from OTC antiseptic drug products through FDA rulemaking, but it's still used in Colgate Total toothpastes to combat gingivitis and in cosmetics where it functions as a preservative. In a newly published paper, the Environmental Working Group and 200 international scientists and medical professionals express concern about the ingredient's use in those categories as well.

CIR Proposes Prioritizing Triclosan For Review In 2018

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel’s draft ingredient priority list for 2018 review consists of 14 ingredients, including triclosan. At their April meeting, panelists cited the potential for consumer confusion following recent FDA action banning the ingredient’s OTC use in antibacterial soaps, as well as endocrine-disruption concerns voiced by NGOs.

Freedom Caucus Hit List Includes Antibacterial Soap, Supplement Label Rules

The caucus of 36 conservative Republicans lists 200 rules passed during the Obama administration, or the that president established through executive orders, that it recommends striking altogether or changing to lessen industries' regulatory burden.
