California DTSC Eyes Triclosan For Priority Product Selection, Seeks Eco Info

California DTSC Seeks Nail Chemical Info With Priority Product Picks Looming

Politically and procedurally, signs point to the selection of nail care containing one of California Department of Toxic Substances Control’s listed Candidate Chemicals as a next-round Priority Product under the state’s Safer Consumer Products Program. Nail-product manufacturers have been put on notice, asked to provide DTSC with information on chemical hazard traits and potentially viable alternative ingredients.

FDA Rule Marks Consumer Antibacterial Soaps An Endangered Category

FDA’s final rule “clarifies the mission” for manufacturers of consumer antibacterial soaps, which have a year to demonstrate that benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol are safe and effective or risk losing the entire OTC drug category. The rule bars firms from marketing consumer antiseptic wash products containing triclosan, triclocarban and 17 other lesser-used active ingredients.

California DTSC Could Target Salon Beauty Products For Alternative Analyses

State's Department of Toxic Substances Control cites concerns about salon employees working with hair and nail products in its final work plan for 2015-2017, which includes personal care as one of seven product categories under scrutiny. This year, DTSC expects to select up to three product-chemical combinations across categories of interest for evaluation under California's Safer Consumer Products regulation, which would require manufacturers to explore alternative substances and potentially reformulate offerings.
