Novogen's Trinovin red clover isoflavone dietary supplement improves International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), nighttime urgency and overall symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), University of Chicago researchers reported.

The study, led by Glen Gerber, MD, and conducted at urology clinics in New York and Los Angeles, involved 29 American men ages 50-75 with BPH. Besides IPSS and nocturnal frequency, the three-month study also investigated urinary flow rates.

Study participants took either one or two 500 mg tablets of Trinovin daily; the recommended dose on product packaging is one per day. Upon completion of the trial, IPSS had fallen 22.6%, nocturnal frequency had decreased 29% and urinary flow rates had increased an average of 9.8%, Novogen reported. Results will be presented at the Endocrine Society meeting in Toronto the week of June 19.

Trinovin is sold in 30-count blister packs for $19.95 at health food stores and drug and mass outlets. Nationwide distribution is under way, the company said. Australia and New Zealand-based Novogen also manufactures Promensil, an isoflavone product targeted for women who are beginning to experience menopause symptoms (1 (Also see "Novogen's Promensil" - Pink Sheet, 30 Mar, 1998.)).

Trinovin contains "natural isoflavones to promote healthy prostate and urinary function," labeling claims. The product "promotes free urinary flow and normal prostate function," according to product literature. "The American Urological Association recommends that all men over 50 have an annual prostate examination by their physician," labeling adds.

Results can be seen in four to five weeks; continued use is necessary to maintain product benefits, Novogen states. The red clover product contains the isoflavones genistein, biochanin, daidzein and formononetin, which the company says are important ingredients in men's diets.

Novogen received a "courtesy" letter from FDA in February concerning Trinovin. The agency identified possible problems with claims regarding ethnicity and prostate health (2 ).
