Executive Summary

Chattem International VP Luke Lenahan brings over 15 years of consumer products marketing experience in Japan and Hong Kong to the newly created position

Chattem International VP Luke Lenahan brings over 15 years of consumer products marketing experience in Japan and Hong Kong to the newly created position.

Lenahan's familiarity with marketing and regulatory processes throughout Asia, coupled with his exposure to categories ranging from oral care and general OTCs to skin and hair care, would appear to fit well with Chattem's forward-looking overseas expansion goals.

Chattem aims to boost its foreign presence, particularly in Asia. Although international spending will not significantly increase in 2002, CEO Zan Guerry recently told analysts that he would like to see overseas operations account for 20%-30% of total sales within five years (1 (Also see "Chattem Goals: International Growth, Doubling Of Net Sales" - HBW Insight, 4 Feb, 2002.), p. 8).

The firm currently operates wholly-owned subsidiaries in Canada (selling brands such as Gold Bond , Flexall and pHisoderm ), the UK (which also covers Australia and the Middle East) and Puerto Rico.

Lenahan, 51, whose appointment was announced Feb. 4, has held senior management positions in two of the world's largest consumer healthcare firms: Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble.

He spent seven years with J&J, most recently as VP and marketing director for consumer health in Japan. In this capacity, Lenahan was involved in J&J's overhaul of its oral care and wound care franchises in that market, focusing on product development and operating initiatives.

Prior to his VP appointment, he was general manager of adult skin care in Tokyo from April 1995 to June 1998, and business development director (Hong Kong) from February 1994 through April 1995.

Before joining J&J, Lenahan was VP-Asia Pacific for White Plains, N.Y.-based Combe Inc. from 1991-1994.

Prior to Combe, Lenahan spent six years at P&G in various marketing/advertising capacities. From 1989-1991, he worked in Japan on campaigns for Clearasil , Vicks , Pantene and Pepto-Bismol . The exec also held marketing positions at L'Oréal, Schering-Plough and Colgate-Palmolive early in his career.
