"There is no basis to conclude that consumers will improperly use" supplements containing saw palmetto if they feature a health claim, AHPA maintains in amicus brief filed May 28. FDA concern that men may self-medicate with saw palmetto and delay diagnosis of other conditions such as cancer "could be fully addressed through a requirement that the saw palmetto health claim be accompanied by information about the need for regular prostate exams," group states. Adding such language "would benefit, not harm, the public health," AHPA adds.
