Executive Summary
Talc and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate are among 21 nominations on a proposed list of substances for the 12th Report on Carcinogens, which is slated for publication in 2006, the National Toxicology Program announces in a May 19 Federal Register 1notice. The substances may be reviewed in 2004 or 2005, "as either a new listing in or changing the current listing in the twelfth report," agency says. NTP is soliciting public input on the nominations, including "carcinogenesis as well as current production data, use patterns or human exposure information." Comments will be accepted for 60 days from the publication of the notice. Talc removed from 12th RoC
Talc has been withdrawn from consideration for inclusion in National Toxicology Program's 12th Report on Carcinogens due to insufficient data on the substance, National Institutes of Health reports in an Oct. 18 Federal Register 1notice. Literature on the ingredient "provides an inadequate characterization of the actual materials under study to enable one to reach definitive conclusions concerning the specific substances responsible for the range of adverse health outcomes reported," NIH notes. CTFA Urges NTP To Reconsider Talc Data For Carcinogenicity Review
The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association encouraged the National Toxicology Program to reconsider data submitted to the agency by the association in 2002 on the safety of cosmetic talc as part of the agency's review of the ingredient for possible listing in the 12th Report on Carcinogens
