Executive Summary

Talc and di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate are among 21 nominations on a proposed list of substances for the 12th Report on Carcinogens, which is slated for publication in 2006, the National Toxicology Program announces in a May 19 Federal Register 1notice. The substances may be reviewed in 2004 or 2005, "as either a new listing in or changing the current listing in the twelfth report," agency says. NTP is soliciting public input on the nominations, including "carcinogenesis as well as current production data, use patterns or human exposure information." Comments will be accepted for 60 days from the publication of the notice. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment recently listed cosmetic ingredient DEHP as a chemical known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity, while the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors ruled at a 2000 RoC subcommittee meeting that non-asbestisform talc should not be listed in the report due to insufficient evidence (2"The Rose Sheet" Oct. 27, 2003, In Brief and 3"The Rose Sheet" Dec. 18, 2000, p. 8)...

Talc removed from 12th RoC

Talc has been withdrawn from consideration for inclusion in National Toxicology Program's 12th Report on Carcinogens due to insufficient data on the substance, National Institutes of Health reports in an Oct. 18 Federal Register 1notice. Literature on the ingredient "provides an inadequate characterization of the actual materials under study to enable one to reach definitive conclusions concerning the specific substances responsible for the range of adverse health outcomes reported," NIH notes. Talc was listed last year as one of 21 nominations proposed for listing in the report, which is slated for publication in 2006 (2"The Rose Sheet" May 24, 2004, In Brief). Substance also was deferred from consideration in the 10th RoC due to insufficient evidence (3"The Rose Sheet" Dec. 18, 2000, p. 8). NTP is accepting comments on the decision until Nov. 17...

CTFA Urges NTP To Reconsider Talc Data For Carcinogenicity Review

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association encouraged the National Toxicology Program to reconsider data submitted to the agency by the association in 2002 on the safety of cosmetic talc as part of the agency's review of the ingredient for possible listing in the 12th Report on Carcinogens

DEHP Prop 65 listing

California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment lists di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate as chemical known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity Oct. 24, agency announces. Listing based on "formal" identification by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and FDA that chemical causes developmental and male reproductive toxicity. OEHHA analyses of dose response data to establish a maximum allowable dose level for DEHP under Prop 65 will be designated a priority in future status report for safe harbor levels, agency reports. OEHHA announced intent to list DEHP in April in the California Regulatory Notice Register (1"The Rose Sheet" April 28, 2003, In Brief)...
