Trudeau’s fine increased
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois orders infomercial marketer Kevin Trudeau to pay $37 million for violating a 2004 ban from producing or publishing infomercials by misrepresenting the contents of his book "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About." A judge raised the fine from more than $5 million to the amount consumers paid in response to Trudeau's deceptive infomercials, the Federal Trade Commission announces Jan. 15. Trudeau seeks investigation
A federal and state investigation of the New York Consumer Protection Board is needed following the recent arrest of its Deputy Director for possession of crack cocaine, supplement marketer Kevin Trudeau maintains. The arrest of Caroline Quartararo "may help to explain the strange and erratic behavior of this renegade government agency," he states in a Jan. 5 release. He will contact the New York Attorney General's Office to ask for a full investigation of the agency. Trudeau, who authored the book Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About, filed a lawsuit in August following the group's consumer warning that the book was misleading (1"The Tan Sheet" Aug. 15, 2005, In Brief). He says a federal judge determined in 2005 that CPB had violated his First Amendment rights. Trudeau also sued FTC in March for a press release which stated he was barred from infomercials (2"The Tan Sheet" March 28, 2005, p. 12)...
Trudeau sues again
Supplement marketer and author Kevin Trudeau is suing the New York Consumer Protection Board in response to the group's Aug. 5 consumer warning that Trudeau's book, Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About, and related infomercials are "exploiting and misleading." The book promotes "natural" cures for cancer and other diseases while criticizing government regulators. However, the book's information is "pure speculation," CPB said in its warning. The group also requests Trudeau pull his "misleading" infomercials from television. Trudeau claims his First Amendment rights are being threatened in the suit filed Aug. 11. Trudeau sued FTC in February for posting a press release entitled, "Kevin Trudeau Banned from Infomercials" (1"The Tan Sheet" March 28, 2005, p. 14)...
