Calcium, vitamin D and PMS

Executive Summary

High intake of calcium and vitamin D may reduce the risk of premenstrual syndrome, Elizabeth Bertone-Johnson, University of Massachusetts, et. al. state in a case-control study published in the June 13 Archives of Internal Medicine. Female subjects with the highest intake of calcium and vitamin D exhibited relative risks of 0.59 and 0.70, respectively. The study was partially funded by GlaxoSmithKline, which launched a Tums Calcium for Life PMS formula based on research finding calcium supplementation reduced the occurrence and severity of premenstrual symptoms (1"The Tan Sheet" Jan. 15, 2001, p. 18).
