Executive Summary

The Department of the Interior's Fish & Wildlife Service will host three public meetings to collect comment on American ginseng, according to a notice in the Federal Register Dec. 29. The findings will be used to gather information for the agency's 2006 findings on the export of American ginseng roots, for the issuance of permits under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora (CITES). The Fish & Wildlife Service changed the legal age for export of American ginseng from a five-year old plant to a 10-year old plant in August, which prompted industry members such as the American Herbal Products Association to voice concerns about the rule's economic effect on harvesters (1"The Tan Sheet" Aug. 15, 2005, p. 12).
