NSF standard for organic products

The National Standards Foundation is accepting comments on its draft standard for organic personal-care products. The proposed standard consists of requirements for the labeling and marketing of organic personal-care products, as well as specifications for processes, production and agricultural and synthetic ingredients. The regulations cover leave-on and wash-off personal care and cosmetic products as well as oral care and personal hygiene items. To date, manufacturers seeking U.S. organic certification for their personal-care offerings have had to appeal to the USDA standards for food. Comments on the draft standards can be submitted on the NSF Web site; they will be accepted until March 3.
