NCCAM names director of research division: The National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine appoints Emmeline Edwards director of the Division of Extramural Research, a unit that develops and oversees center-funded research and coordinates with other NIH research efforts, NCCAM says in a Jan. 19 release. Edwards most recently served in the same position at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, where she oversaw NINDS-funded research programs. "Her background and her proven expertise in the oversight of basic and applied research will prove invaluable" to the center, NCCAM Director Josephine Briggs said. Before joining NIH, Edwards was program director for behavior neuroscience at the National Science Foundation, as well as a faculty member in the University of Maryland's Pharmacology and Neuroscience Programs. Edwards said her work has been "highly interdisciplinary and included the integration of basic, translational and clinical research - this will be particularly helpful in organizing and structuring types of research supported by NCCAM to build a strong evidence base for CAM modalities.
