A new study has failed to detect any difference between the X-ray scattering properties of hair from healthy women and women with breast cancer. Last year, Australian researchers reported that differences existed in the intermolecular structure of pubic hair from women with breast cancer, as revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis, although this finding was subsequently disputed by French researchers (see Clinica No 867, p 21). The latest study, which employed Bruker's benchtop Nanostar small-angle X-ray scattering system rather than synchrotron radiation, was performed by researchers in Germany and Austria and reported in the July 5 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
