Executive Summary
Funding for research and development in the UK will operate under new rules from April 1998. Support will come from a new NHS R&D levy and be allocated on the basis of competitive bids. It will be open to all NHS providers which include primary care professionals as well as NHS trusts. All health authorities, and indirectly GP fundholders, will make a mandatory contribution to the levy.
