Infant formula survey

Executive Summary
Infant Formula Council submits July 25 letter to FDA providing results of an industry-wide survey that found an "extremely low lead content, if any, of infant formulas as well as the ingredient water used to manufacture" them. "Over 99% of the infant formula data points (1,888 of 1,903) and 100% of the ingredient water data points (218) are less than or equal to 5 ppb, which is the quantification limit of the method for some laboratories," IFC said. The less than 1% of the infant formula data points that exceeded 5 ppb ranged from 6 to 9 ppb. The survey was part of IFC's ongoing efforts to monitor levels of lead and pesticides in infant formula ("The Tan Sheet" May 10, 1993, p. 9)
