Executive Summary
"SOME COSMETIC PRODUCTS MAY BE UNDERPRESERVED," FDA RESEARCHERS T.T. Tran et al. concluded in a study, "Adequacy of cosmetic preservation: chemical analysis, microbial challenge and in-use testing," published recently in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science. The researchers tested the adequacy of preservation of seven previously unopened cosmetic products by microbial challenge using the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) method. Three of the formulations were also in-use tested. Of the seven cream makeup formulations tested, five were found to be "well preserved," one was "marginally preserved," and one was "poorly preserved," Tran et al. said.
