AVON SEEKING EXPANDED CUSTOMER BASE THROUGH READER'S DIGEST ALLIANCE, the direct-sales cosmetic company said. In a Sept. 28 joint announcement of the agreement, Avon and The Reader's Digest Association said it will begin testing a marketing strategy in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and France, whereby each firm will market the other's products with its own. In explaining the alliance, Avon Chairman and CEO James Preston said that "The Reader's Digest Association's customer database represents a very attractive group of potential customers for Avon." The alliance also will provide a new avenue through which Avon can recruit representatives, Preston added.
