Gillette animal testing: Federal Trade Commission "declin[es] to take any action" on a People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals' petition requesting an FTC investigation of Gillette animal testing statements. In the Feb. 21 petition, PETA asserted that specific claims used by the personal care company, which state that the animal testing employed by Gillette is "required by the FDA" and "implicitly required by law," are "false, misleading and deceptive" ("The Rose Sheet" March 4, p. 8). In FTC's July 2 letter, the commission explained that investigations are initiated on cases that affect a large number of consumers, "pose a risk to consumers' health or safety" or cause "significant economic harm"...
