Amway fluoride citizen petition: Submitted Oct. 8 to FDA requesting permission to use the results of an intra-oral test in humans to demonstrate the bioavailability of fluoride in Glister Fluoride Toothpaste, a product which has been on the market for about 18 years. The final monograph, which requires animal caries bioavailability data, became effective Oct. 7. As part of company policy, Amway does not test its products on animals. Tom's of Maine, another company which does not use animals for safety and efficacy testing, recently submitted a petition for an intra-oral alternative test for its Tom's Natural Toothpaste Children's, Baking Soda and Wintermint formulations ("The Tan Sheet" Sept. 22, p. 6).
