CIR SAFETY REVIEW OF BHA SUN SENSITIVITY RECOMMENDED BY FDA Office of Cosmetics and Colors Director John Bailey, PhD, because of the recent explosion of beta hydroxy acid ingredients in skin care and cosmetics products. Speaking at the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association's 1997 scientific meeting in Atlantic City Oct. 26-29, Bailey suggested the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel investigate the safety of BHAs with the same scrutiny as the panel's review of alpha hydroxy acids. Specifically, the FDAer proposed CIR examine "sun exposure, sun sensitivity and the possible long-term effects" of BHAs on skin.
