Executive Summary
Makeup sales rose 18% to $76.5 mil. and perfume sales generated $210.2 mil., up 14.3% in 1998 as compared to the prior year, the Paris-based cosmetics company reported Feb. 5. Skin care sales made small gains, with a 4.7% increase to $363.2 mil. in 1998. Overall cosmetics sales increased 9.1% to $650 mil. for the year. Clarins gained "market shares worldwide" and attributed the performance to "an upturn in consumer spending" in Europe and North America, successful product launches in skin care and makeup and growth in perfumes. The company's consolidated sales for the year reached $694.4 mil., a 12.4% increase. Clarins maintains its forecast of achieving a "net margin over 5%"
